🥘 Traditional Spanish Paella Recipe
Paella is a world-famous Spanish rice dish that originated in Valencia. It’s full of color, flavor, and can be made with seafood, chicken, or mixed meats. Here’s a classic seafood paella recipe that’s perfect for any occasion!
✅ Ingredients:
-
2 tablespoons olive oil
-
1 onion (finely chopped)
-
3 garlic cloves (minced)
-
1 red bell pepper (sliced)
-
1 green bell pepper (sliced)
-
1 ½ cups (300g) short-grain rice (like Arborio or Bomba)
-
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
-
A pinch of saffron threads (optional but traditional)
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
½ teaspoon black pepper
-
3 cups (750ml) chicken or seafood stock (hot)
-
200g (7 oz) shrimp (peeled and deveined)
-
150g (5 oz) squid rings
-
150g (5 oz) mussels (cleaned)
-
1 lemon (cut into wedges)
-
Fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish)
👨🍳 Instructions:
-
Heat the oil in a large paella pan or wide skillet over medium heat.
-
Add the onion, garlic, and bell peppers. Cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
-
Stir in the rice, paprika, saffron, salt, and pepper. Mix well to coat the rice.
-
Pour in the hot stock and spread the rice evenly. Do not stir after this point.
-
Cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes uncovered.
-
Add the shrimp, squid, and mussels on top. Gently press them into the rice.
-
Reduce the heat and simmer for another 10–15 minutes until the rice is cooked and the seafood is done.
-
Turn off the heat and cover with a clean towel. Let it rest for 5–10 minutes.
-
Garnish with fresh parsley and lemon wedges before serving.
💡 Tips:
-
Do not stir once the stock is added – this helps form the crispy bottom called “socarrat.”
-
You can substitute seafood with chicken or vegetables if preferred.
