🥟 Homemade Pierogi Recipe
Pierogi are traditional Polish dumplings filled with a variety of savory or sweet ingredients. This recipe features a classic potato and cheese filling, perfect for beginners and pierogi lovers alike!
📝 Ingredients:
For the Dough:
-
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
-
1 large egg
-
½ cup sour cream
-
¼ cup butter, softened
-
½ tsp salt
For the Filling:
-
2 cups mashed potatoes (preferably chilled)
-
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
-
Salt and pepper to taste
-
Optional: sautéed onions for extra flavor
To Cook:
-
Butter and chopped onions for frying
-
Sour cream for serving
👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the egg, sour cream, and softened butter. Mix until the dough comes together. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the Filling:
In a bowl, combine mashed potatoes and shredded cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Add sautéed onions if desired.
3. Assemble the Pierogi:
Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into 3-inch circles. Place a small spoonful of filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over and press the edges to seal (use a fork for a crimped look).
4. Cook the Pierogi:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pierogi in batches for about 3-4 minutes or until they float. Remove and drain.
5. Fry (Optional but Recommended):
In a pan, melt butter and sauté chopped onions. Add boiled pierogi and fry until golden brown on both sides.
🍽️ Serving Suggestions:
Serve hot with sour cream and caramelized onions. You can also enjoy them with bacon bits or a sprinkle of chives.
