🍛 Sri Lankan Chicken Kottu Roti Recipe – Street Food Favorite!
If you’ve ever visited Sri Lanka, you’ve probably heard the rhythmic clack-clack of metal blades hitting a hot griddle—yes, that’s Kottu Roti! This spicy, savory dish is a street food staple, combining chopped flatbread (roti), vegetables, egg, and tender chicken, all stir-fried in a flavorful curry base. It’s comforting, delicious, and easy to recreate at home!
📝 Ingredients:
For the Chicken:
500g boneless chicken (cut into small pieces)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 tsp curry powder
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oil
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
For the Roti:
4-5 Godamba rotis (or parathas), chopped into small pieces
(You can use store-bought frozen parathas if you can't find Godamba roti)
Vegetables & Egg:
1 onion, sliced
1 carrot, grated or thinly sliced
1 cup cabbage, thinly sliced
1 green chili, chopped
2 eggs
2 tbsp oil
For the Kottu Sauce:
1 tsp curry powder
1/2 tsp chili flakes (adjust to taste)
1/2 tsp garam masala (optional)
Salt to taste
2 tbsp tomato ketchup or a splash of chicken curry gravy (for extra flavor)
🍳 Instructions:
Step 1: Cook the Chicken
Heat oil in a pan.
Add the ginger garlic paste and marinated chicken (with spices).
Cook on medium heat until the chicken is fully cooked and slightly browned. Set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Roti
Chop the roti into bite-sized strips or squares. If you're using frozen roti, cook it first according to the package and then cut.
Step 3: Stir-Fry Everything Together
In a large wok or wide pan, heat oil.
Add onion, green chili, carrot, and cabbage. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until slightly soft.
Push the veggies to one side, crack in the eggs, scramble them, and mix everything together.
Add the cooked chicken, spices, and ketchup or gravy. Mix well.
Finally, add chopped roti and toss everything together for 3–5 minutes until heated through and well coated with the spices.
✅ Tips:
Want it extra spicy? Add more chili flakes or some chopped chili paste.
You can replace chicken with beef, mutton, or even tofu for a vegetarian version.
Serve with lime wedges and a side of curry gravy for dipping!
